Re: Materials Science C

Correct, the sp3 hybridized orbitals of Carbon bond with the p orbitals of Chlorine. Carbon is normally 2s2 2p2, it hybridizes to get 4 sp3 orbitals. Chlorine is 3s2 3p5 - it seeks one additional electron in the p-orbital. So each one of the sp3 orbitals of Carbon bonds with a p orbital of Chlorine.

Re: College Advice for Younger Olympians

Additionally, in general wonderful opportunities are more accessible at top-notch schools (which makes sense when you consider that you're surrounded by these highly accomplished professors and students, as well as - let's face it - rich people who like your school). Here, at least, it's easy to ge...

Re: College Advice for Younger Olympians

What you did in college (GPA, projects, activities, research, etc) will have far more weight than where you went to school. This is where many people get confused. Is this really true? I was always under the impression that going to a big-name school would have far more weight than what you did (GP...

Re: College Advice for Younger Olympians

If there's one piece of advice I'd give, it's to not put too much emphasis on the name. I know that many people here envision going to top schools - and I can understand why. Yes, top schools like the Ivy League, MIT, Stanford, etc, may be great schools - but they are expensive. If you get scholarsh...

Re: Materials Science C

Ah yeah, forgot to correct that. We corrected it on the paper copies we used for grading, but I never fixed the document. I'll put up a corrected version at some point.

As a basis of comparison, the average for the test was right around 50. The high score I believe was 82, and the low 21.

Re: Hockey

Ain't got nothing on Leafs-Sabres. Proximity of the two cities makes it big. Although Leafs-Habs is up there too.

Re: Materials Science C

I'm on vacation through the weekend. Not sure if the test is on my laptop (which is with me) or my external hard drive (which isn't). I'll take a look tomorrow.

Re: Gravity Vehicle C

The annoying part about the ramp is the release mechanism... Our first two ES's had different interpretations of the rules... Just out of curiosity, what's everyone else been doing for a release mechanism? We just mounted an exacto knife to the ramp and tie the vehicle up with a string :D Isn't it ...

Re: Hockey

So, about that realignment proposal. For those who are unaware, the NHL has re-proposed a plan to realign the league into two conferences with two divisions each. However, now, each division will send three teams to the playoffs, and then each conference will have two wild card spots. The divisions...

Re: Materials Science C

Yeah, I'm not sure if they are using any of the questions that I got sent from NYSSO or not. I'll post it after their regionals is over, or if I have the chance, I could post a partial test removing the questions that came from the state.

Re: Shock Value B/Circuit Lab C

Is it just the last digit that's changing (and if so, what is that digit)? That's not very unusual.
