At Regionals, we had so many kids that some of the other teams were making comments like "Did they bring their whole freaking school?!" Then again, we're not too popular at Regionals already.

Yeah. Just because you're really good at something doesn't mean that it makes you a jerk. What's wrong with a sincere "good luck"?

Exactly... and until this year, nobody from our team was EVER rude to other teams; our coach drilled it into our heads that we had to be above all that crap.
(Then, of course, this year some guy decided that didn't matter, and started randomly insulting other teams, making them hate us even more... and destroying our reputation among the adults in the region as being good kids.)

I hate when one kid is bad, and then everybody pictures everybody else from your school as being that bad. It's stupid.

Well, the other teams were pretty much looking for reasons to dislike us... 9 years of 1st place does not endear you to other teams.

We have a team like that in my region: White Pines. They usually get 2nd at nats, but we don't hate them. We just like to make up stories about them.

Who was it? If I had to take a guess, I would, but it's probably easier to find out from you than by guessing wrongly.

Actually, it was 2 people: Frank and Mario... Mario actually got a penalty for his team; Frank just got yelled at by an event sup.

His event sup assessed a penalty in the event? Which event?

Well, the one who actually got a penalty (at least, my coach was told he was going to be given a penalty) was in Car of Tomorrow... the other, I don't know which event it was, but the person who yelled at him wasn't the supervisor of his event, she was another official who happened to be there at the moment that he yelled some expletives at the top of his lungs in the hallway (directed at someone else). Apparently, she mentioned the possibility of giving him a penalty for it, but didn't actually add any penalties in the end.

I don't think he did get a penalty. The accepted way to impose a penalty like that is to apply it to the team score, and I know that didn't happen. It is possible that the event sup assessed some kind of penalty before he reported the results, but he isn't supposed to do that and I'm not sure how he would go about it.

Oh, okay. How often do teams actually get penalties at the different competitions (Regionals, States, Nationals)? What do you have to do to get a penalty?

Hardly ever. You are supposed to get a penalty if your coaches don't show up for their judging assignments, but sometimes people get away with that. Otherwise, being really rude to an event supe would probably work.
