Sci Oly App?

Sci Oly App?

Postby mrsteven on Sat Apr 07, 2012 10:03 pm

I think we should have a Sci Oly app.
I spend alot of my time on the go (or at school) and want to check sci oly easier. The mobile version is a little effy and hard to navigate through, let alone find specific things. An app would be awesome from my iphone/droid and lead to the user page directory of watched topics to see if any new posts were made to relevant topics to you, get to PMs, and generally scan through the forums.

Just an idea.

I'd rather see the effort put into improving whatever the shortcomings of the mobile version are (perhaps if suggestions are made someone can work on them) than creating an app. I see little if anything that an app could offer that a mobile website could not.

True, then here are a few things I would like to see out of the mobile version that bugged me enough to stay on the desktop version on my iphone, just some things I find issues with maybe not everyone agrees:
- hard to find relevant topics, the set up is a little ehh
- (if I remember correctly) no real way to log in to view the topics you subscribe to like on the screen under Use Control Panel of the regular version. This is where I spend 80% of my time, refreshing this to see if any new posts to my event topics all in 1 place. Actually, if the mobile had this page that would be really what I'd like out of it that way its a 'master control' of sorts that you dont need to weed through all the topics/subjects b/c you've already subscribed to them
- More easily accessible PM system.

Maybe even have a 'notification Center' of sorts where it lists the topics subscribed to (showing new replys or not in those topics) and any new PMs. Similar to what the drop down menu of IOS 5 does. Maybe not a drop down, but you understand, yes?

Some ideas...

It would be much more likely for the mobile theme to be worked on based on user suggestions, then creating a scioly app.

So lets keep hearing suggestions.

Something about the mark all read button is counterintuitive. You have to click it to figure out what it's supposed to do.
Also, the PM system is hard to navigate. It only shows your inbox folder (well, I can't find any of my other folders). Also, I have difficulty figuring out from whom the PMs are, and when they were sent without opening them, thus marking them read, making it easy to forget about them. However, I really like how it's not all cluttered.

Although not 100% on topic of the edited mobile version:
The PM system I'd really really like more space. I ran out a long time ago but still messages with important content- and having to delete one every I get another PM. Maybe an archive function so I can keep the other messages which are still important, and have room for more. Or just flat out make the holding capacity larger.

Anyway back to kinks in the mobile version:

Have you created additional folders? Creating additional folders allows you to store more than 50 messages, if that's where you're at right now.

Right, back to the issue of the mobile version.
Make the UCP accessible.
Make the folders in your inbox visible.
Be able to navigate the forum more easily.
Right, I think that's it for right now.

I actually use the mobile version of the site a good bit, and the thing that irks me the most about it...is that you can't turn off the mobile version from the mobile version (or it's buried so deep in some menu that I can't find it).

Also, the return button on most of the forums kicks me back to the main page (the one with links that say "forums", "messages", "who is online", etc.) - I'd prefer for it to return me to the index page of all the forums instead, since it makes more sense that way.
