I'm pretty sure it's switching to water quality.

Don't be too sad - its basically the ecology of estuaries, with a little ID and salinometer-building thrown in.

Its not that difficult - we built a crude one in chemistry last year. The only downside is that everyone will be basically building the same exact one..

...
INSTRUCTIONS (a la quizbowl)
1) Take a straw.
2) Put modeling clay on the end of the straw, sealing one end completely.
3) Put the straw clayside down in distilled water.
4) Make a mark on the straw of where the water level is.
5) Repeat steps, but with different salt concentrations.

Basically, its the generic version, and almost all competitors will be doing that. I looked into using lead shots as a weight, but it doesn't seem so feasible. I wish there was another way to build it - and I'm sure that a team will figure it out next year.

Paleonaps, I've noticed that you've been spamming the event threads recently. It's somewhat annoying and it makes your post count really big. Could you please stop?

Just a friendly request.

Edit: I'm sure someone will try this

This might have been better suited for a PM, but sure. I attribute it to boredom, considering I have been home sick for all of today and yesterday, and have spent all day logged in.

Does anyone else see any good methods of building one? I've been prowling the internet for these, and I can't find anything better than this. It's a shame - with everyone doing the same thing, it'll be down to miniscule measurements to determine winners. Maybe there could be a pre-build of a device to measure pH or turbidity, or maybe DO or nutrient levels?

Make seperate forum for this or wait until next year. We have to focus on ecology. How do you calculate population growth (annual, doubling time, etc...)

Wel...that was awfully rude. Actually since they are speaking about something that still has to do with ecology they can do whatever they want. But ya...its in the handout.

Annual growth : G = nr, (just add G + n to get the new population)
Doubling time: Divide 70 by the rate to get the doubling time (e.g. rate of 1.75 --> 70/1.75 --> 40 year doubling time)
Thanks for the rude comment, just trying to get some feedback on the event that is replacing ecology :|
Oh, and I believe the word is "separate".

It's a pretty minor part of the event, it's not like it's really a building event. It doesn't really matter that people will be building similar ones.

Water Quality was one of my favorite events, I really enjoyed it.
