Fossils

Talk about Fossils here. I guess I'll join this event, but I wish Rocks and Minerals was still an event.

fossils was an awesome event, I did it a few years ago, and I'm really glad that I get to do it again. And don't worry, you do have to know some rock stuff.

its questions on identification (obviously), generally based on genus, but it can be broader, and there are other questions on habitat, formation (cast, mold, petrifaction, etc.), anatomy, and age. I've also seen questions on geologic time. Also, know your index fossils. You're gonna love youre earth science reference tables (if you dont get these since you dont take a regents if not in new york, print them out online, they really help, trust me. Its a great event, like a mix between rocks and biology.

its really not a bad event. then again, the scio coach who taught me all this stuff is obsessed with rocks and fossils.

For one thing, study my amazing fossils wiki. Other than that, I dont really know, cause my scio coach taught me everything. I'd suggest waiting for it to go up on the soinc.org site and following one of the links, or just browsing the internet to see what you can find. Also, theres a book im doing my AP environmental summer assignment on called "Wonderful Life", and its about the Burgess shale find. Its pretty interesting.

yeah, you should wait for the list, so you get to know what genuses to start studying. Or if you want, you can try to dig up an old list from several years ago. They probably have similar organisms. Also, look for a copy of the Earth Science regents reference tables. They middle 2 pages help a lot, and the other pages may help for other earth sciences events.

The regents is a standardized test in NY state. Everybody in the state takes it for their classes. They're very easy, and for the sciences (besides bio) you get a reference table. Google "NY state earth science regents reference table", and try to get the most recent one.
